The dam will supply water for irrigation during summer months by capturing water over wetter months and storing it for use during dry periods. The water is intended to be used for horticultural industries, such as nearby orchards.

However, there is a concern over the price of the stored water, and that its availability will result in an increase of dairy farms in the area. An expansion of the dairy industry ill further pollute the regions waterways, such as the Tukituki river, through increased runoff of both effluent and fertilizer from nearby farms.
