Get away from technology, no TV, no cellphone coverage; wake up to the sound of birdsong, the sea and breezes in the trees.

Enjoy the 20 minute graveled nature trail, or try the longer more challenging three hour “Long Track” both on site.  The native bush features extensive kamahi/rimu forest - bush birds - bellbird, tui, kereru, fernbirds in wetlands, glow worms. Learn about logging history by walking to the adjacent Historic Sawmill site with interpretation and the restored Traill Engine.

The Tautuku Forest Cabins make a good base for discovering the Catlins – spend a few days visiting the wider area – five minutes drive to Tautuku Beach, Cathedral Caves or Lake Wilkie. A bit longer to Maclean, Matai, and Purakaunui Falls, each one different. Papatowai Walking Tracks, Estuary and Wetland Boardwalks are all nearby. Ten minutes drive takes you to Papatowai with its shop, beaches and bush walks. Visit the Whistling Frog at the Maclean Falls for a coffee or meal.

The main cabin sleeps 10, Coutts cabin sleeps 4 and the A Frame sleeps 2.

Both the Main & Coutts cabins have comfortable heated lounge areas with heat pump in the Main cabin & electric heaters in Coutts & the A Frame. Fully equipped kitchens include stove (electric range) or hot plate, microwave, toaster, electric jug, cooking utensils, crockery & cutlery.

Main Cabin bedrooms have bunks, mattresses & pillows. Coutts & the A Frame have 2 single beds in each. You will need to bring your own bed linen.  Flush toilets & hot showers for the Main Lodge are within the Main Block. Coutts & A Frame ablution block is situated between the two cabins.

What better chance to see native birds, marine life and beautiful bush than from these affordable comfortable cabins of the Lenz Reserve.

The Lenz Tautuku Forest Cabins are child friendly but unsuitable for wheelchairs. Sorry, no pets and no camping.

Forest & Bird is a not-for-profit incorporated society. Forest & Bird owns the Lenz Reserve and Tautuku Forest Cabins and all proceeds from bookings go towards the upkeep of the Lenz Reserve and cabins.

Working Weekends at Tautuku and the Lenz Reserve

Southland Branch organises working weekends at Tautuku on two weekends a year – in May and September. If you join us on those weekends to help with work on the buildings and tracks you will be able to stay overnight for free. It is a great way to experience what the Lenz Reserve and the wider area have to offer – and the work is not too hard (we have jobs to suit all ages and abilities). See our calendar of events for the dates of the working weekends or contact Dawn Patterson (03 2160226) if you want to be put on a list of potential helpers. Often helpers also come from South Otago and Dunedin Branches.
